Traditional Uses of Coconut Oil
Traditionally, “the miracle oil” has innumerable uses because of its countless benefits. It is rich in saturated fat, its very stable fat that can be used for high heat cooking and baking. Apart from cooking, it’s a good moisturizer for your skin and hair.
The Controversy!!!
Recently a Professor from Harvard University just revealed that coconut oil is a pure poison and is one of the worst foods that you eat. Her claim has started a long debate about the benefits of this “one for all” product. Her lecture, “Coconut Oil and other nutritional Error” was widely viewed on YouTube, and gets more than one million views within a month.Meet the Culprit.. The Saturated Fats!!
Dr. Karin Michels said that this oil contains high amount of saturated fats (more than 80% fat). This high amount of saturated fat is even more damaging than beef dripping and lard. She expresses her concern for its tendency to raise level of LDL cholesterol in blood, which can causes coronary heart diseases.
People Were Not Ready To Accept This Statement
People from other regions of the world especially south India, where coconut oil is a staple kitchen ingredient clearly opposed her claim about benefits of cooking oil. Thousands of people have tweeted against her research claims; If coconut oil is “ pure poison” then people in my hometown-Philippines should’ve died early coz they use coconuts and coconut oil everyday on every dish until now.. people there live long in their 100’s.. my grand parents both 101 yrs old.. still strong!

“But what’s interesting about coconut oil is that it also gives “good” HDL cholesterol a boost. Fat in the diet, whether it’s saturated or unsaturated, tends to nudge HDL levels up, but coconut oil seems to be especially potent at doing so. Coconut is a wonderful flavor and there’s no problem using coconut oil occasionally”Wrapping up, nothing is as bad as it is assumed. Though we respect efforts and research of Dr. “Karin, but it will be totally wrong if we agree with her statement that “coconut oil is pure poison”. Yes, it can be harmful for those who are at risk of cardiovascular diseases. In this reference even though basil seed are called miracle seeds, they have been called dangerous too! Well, it’s more important to focus on your overall dietary picture. Remember to consume saturated fats as per the limits set by the AHA that is;20 g/day for women and 30 g/day for men.
